I Get Knocked Down, But I Get Up Again (Sing It With Me!)

I’m a bit sentimental today. Looking back at my 26 1/2 years doing this internet stuff full-time from my home office, there’s one thing that has separated me and my successful friends and colleagues in this business.

I never gave up. That is literally THE secret to my success, and it can be yours as well.

People quit too easily, they give up on their dreams too fast, and if something doesn’t work in a week, they say “it doesn’t work at all”.

Heck, if I had that attitude, I’d still be driving a tractor trailer (well, I kind of miss  driving a big rig, especially that sweet looking Mack right there).

And I’d still be working for “The Man” (and believe me, I DO NOT miss THAT part!) and wouldn’t have a lot to show for it.

So, I want you to sit up and pay attention here. Let’s talk about:

The Power of Perseverance: Why Giving Up Is Not an Option

In the rollercoaster journey that is life—and particularly in the high-stakes world of digital marketing—there are countless moments when throwing in the towel seems like the only reasonable option. But here’s the thing: giving up is simply not in the playbook of the successful. Including me, no matter how tough things were in the beginning, giving up never crossed my mind.

I’m here to tell you, from over 26 years of riding the ups and downs of online entrepreneurship, that the power of perseverance is your greatest asset. It’s why I’m here at home and my fellow co-workers are still driving trucks.

Let’s face it, success in marketing, or any venture for that matter, is not an overnight achievement.

It’s the culmination of relentless pursuit, countless failures, and an unwavering commitment to learning and growth. Remember, every failure is not a step back but a step forward towards your goal, cloaked in the guise of a valuable lesson learned.

Easy to say, but harder to live. I know that, but bear with me. This not a bunch of rah-rah motivation here, brothers and sisters, but it IS exactly what you need to hear.

The Frank Garon (That’s Me) Perspective on Not Giving Up

From my own crazy journey here online, I’ve gleaned a fundamental truth: the path to success is littered with obstacles that seem insurmountable. And sometimes those obstacles seem like boobytrapped landmines. I get it because I’ve been there. And none of that stuff is fun.

Yet, it’s those very obstacles that test our resolve and sharpen our skills. In the world of online marketing, where algorithms change at the blink of an eye and competition is fierce, resilience is not just a virtue—it’s a necessity. You have to learn how to a) think for yourself, and b) think on your feet.

Think about list building, for instance. It’s a marathon, not a sprint. Building a robust email list, cultivating relationships with your subscribers, and delivering consistent value takes time and effort.

There will be days when your list seems to stagnate, or worse, shrink. But giving up? That’s not how stories of success are written. My list, you good folks, have been great to me over the years. But I started like everybody else does – one hard-won subscriber at a time.

Embrace the Setbacks

I’ve always believed that setbacks are merely setups for comebacks.

Well, not “always”.

I mean, I had to learn this kind of a mindset. I just didn’t wake up one day with all this stuff magically built into my head. I hate setbacks as much as you do, but I also know that there’s always a way forward.

When a marketing campaign flops or a product launch doesn’t go as planned, it’s easy to feel defeated. However, these moments are golden opportunities for introspection and recalibration. They force us to ask the tough questions: What went wrong? How can we do better next time? It’s through these kinds of frustrations that we evolve.

Put Your Perseverance in Practice, Please. (say that five times fast…)

How do you cultivate this unwavering perseverance? Start by setting clear, achievable goals. Break them down into manageable tasks to avoid feeling overwhelmed. Celebrate the small victories along the way—they’re proof of your progress.

Surround yourself with a network of supporters who believe in your vision. Their encouragement can be the fuel that keeps you going during tough times. And when doubt creeps in, remember why you started. Revisit your initial motivation and let it rekindle your drive.

And remember, if a bankrupt truck driver from New Jersey like me can do this, you can too. I can promise you that.

A Word on Failure

In the pursuit of success, failure is inevitable. But in each failure, there’s a lesson to be learned. Embrace it. Analyze it. Grow from it.

The most successful marketers are those who have failed the most but refused to let those failures define them. And yes, it is perfectly normal to feel frustrated, upset, or sad. Just not for long. Getting up and get back in the game is the only option.

Conclusion: Keep Pushing Forward

The journey to success is fraught with challenges, but it’s those very challenges that make the achievement so rewarding. As I’ve learned over the years, giving up is not an option.

Perseverance, fueled by passion and a clear vision, is the key to overcoming any obstacle. That, and treating people right. But that’s a story for another day.

So, if you are feeling disheartened or contemplating giving up, remember this: the breakthrough you’re seeking could be just around the corner. Keep pushing forward, keep learning, and most importantly, keep believing in yourself. The path to success is a testament to the power of perseverance. Never give up on your dreams. They’re closer to reality than you think.
