I have the words “Just Do The Next Right Thing” printed out taped right next to me here at my desk. I look at it often and with good reason.
Originally, I thought it had something to do with AA. I printed it out anyway because it made so much sense to me.
I mean after all, if you don’t know what to do, it makes total sense to ask yourself “what is the next right thing?”.
The reason I bring this up is I see so many people get overwhelmed at trying to do something online.
They try this course, it doesn’t work. They try that technique, it doesn’t work. They try this other thing, it doesn’t work either.
It gets to a point where they get so confused, they just don’t know what to do.
And I’ve known that feeling on more than one occasion myself, believe me.
So whether it’s something to do with work or your personal life, I think there really is only one question you should ask yourself to figure out if you’re on the right path or not.
And that question is “what is the next right thing I should be doing?”.
If you, and I, learn to ask that question, and listen quietly for the real answer, how much better would each of our lives be?
How much more on track would we feel?
How much more productive would we be?
It is so hard in today’s busy, hectic world, where we are bombarded continually by choices and information and options in questions and problems. No wonder somebody trying to do something good online (or in any aspect of life) can get sidetracked.
Like I said, I have the I’ve had this “Just Do The Next Right Thing” printed out and stuck to the side of my computer tower for months now. And although I look at it continually, I have to say it sometimes it’s hard to ask that question. It’s even harder to take action sometimes.
For me, right now, it is to drink more water, eat better, and exercise more. Meditate, reflect, work on personal development, and get my rear end back to church.
Now I can’t do all those at once, but those are the things that I need to do next. Those are the “right things”. All the rest will fall into place after that.
You would think that after 28 years working full-time from home and being my own boss, I would have everything down to some perfect formula. But I too am only human, and sometimes life gets in my way, just like I’m sure does yours.
I wish there was a magic wand I could wave for you to fix everything and make your life flow perfectly and everything go good.
Unfortunately, that’s not the way how life works. Freedom of choice, living one’s own life, knowing oneself, all these things take work, drive and discipline. And like I said, we are constantly bombarded by information and choices and options.
So how exactly are you supposed to figure out who you are, and what you want to do in life, what the best things are for you?
Well, I think it is a constant work in progress. As a matter of fact, I know it is.
Easier said than done though. I’m writing this note as much for myself as I am for you. I try to be a really good business partner, coach, husband, parent, son, friend, etc. as I can. But it isn’t always easy.
So perhaps we both can benefit by slowing down just a tiny bit. And rather than just reacting all the time, and dealing with the occasional sense of overwhelm and confusion, we each could ask ourselves “What IS The Next Right Thing” and just do that one thing.
By learning to sit quietly and listen to ourselves, the answer will absolutely reveal itself. I know that for a fact.
Now, I just need to get a little bit better at carrying that out in person. And I wish the same for you.
“Just Do The Next Right Thing”. There is so much wisdom in those six little words.
